US 421 Bypass

Posted by Rita on Dec 30 2007 | Sanford Area News

The US 421 bypass around Sanford has been under construction for several years. A short section from Colon Road to Kelly Drive opened last year. This short section was out in the country and has been little used. Two additional sections were scheduled to be opened before the end of 2007. One of these two sections opened a few weeks ago. US 421 Bypass
Sanford NC Map The newest section to open connects NC 42 (Avents Ferry Road) to Kelly Drive. This section is labeled as section “D” on the map at left. Together with the previously opened section “C”, the bypass is now open between Colon Road and NC 42. The new section comes out right next to East Lee Middle school and the Coty plant on the East side of Sanford. This should reduce drive time to Raleigh for anyone on the East side of Sanford or Broadway.
A recent article in the Sanford Herald said that the next section of the bypass connecting to US 1 (section B on the above map) will open some time in January. The paper said this section is delayed due to a problem with road signs. This section will allow traffic to bypass all the traffic lights of downtown and is eagerly anticipated by many (including me). My concern is that when this section opens, a lot of traffic including heavy trucks will be funneled down a 2 lane stretch of NC 42 to get to the bypass. With homes along this stretch of Avents Ferry Road, I hope folks will be careful once this section does open. The final two sections of the bypass (labeled “A” and “E” on the map above) were originally scheduled to start construction in 2008 but they have been delayed. The completion date for these sections has not been determined. I hope to see the road completed in the near future to alleviate congestion on Horner Boulevard. US 421 Bypass

Raven Rock State Park in the Fall

Posted by Rita on Dec 08 2007 | Around Town, Things to do

Raven Rock Fall Panoramic
The leaves were at their peak here in Central North Carolina the third week of November. We decided to head to our favorite local state park out at Raven Rock. We grabbed a tailgate special from Smithfield’s and headed the short drive down the road. After the picnic we went for a short hike down the trails in Raven Rock park. We were rewarded with many trees in full fall color. Raven Rock Trail in the fall
Raven Rock Creek in the fall The creek that followed the trail was pretty with the streambed lined with leaves that had recently fallen.
We decided to explore the canoe campsite along the Cape Fear River. You can paddle your canoe down the River and then camp in the park. I am not much of a paddler myself but my son’s scout troop may take advantage of this in the spring. Raven Rock Canoe Camp
Cape Fear River We also walked down to the Cape Fear River. Our area is in a drought this year and we could see that the river is well below its normal level.
Back on the trail we enjoyed the color of the leaves changing on a warm fall afternoon. Raven Rock Trail in the fall
Raven Rock Overlook We visited the overlook along the trail and were rewarded with some great views of the Cape Fear River far below. We had a great time and can’t wait until the spring when we can visit again and enjoy the flowers in bloom.

Carolina Trace in Sanford - Beautiful in Autumn

Posted by Rita on Dec 08 2007 | Lee County Subdivisions, Sanford Area Subdivisions

Carolina Trace View of Lake Trace in Autumn
Carolina Trace Autumn Views on Traceway Autumn usually visits this part of North Carolina at the end of October and finishes up in early November. This year it has been warmer and drier than normal and fall came later than usual. Just before Thanksgiving the the leaves were at their peak. Carolina Trace is a pretty development and I got the chance to take a few pictures before the leaves all fell. The picture at left was taken along the main road - called the Traceway just beyond the turn for the country club. The road here goes up a hill and around a bend.
As I continued down Traceway, I took a few shots of one of the ponds along the Creek Course. The blue skies and the colors on the trees look pretty, especially when reflected in the water. Carolina Trace View of Pond in Autumn
Carolina Trace Autumn Views on Traceway The road continued to give me some great scenery on this wonderful fall day. This shot was taken just before reaching Mallard Cove and Highland Woods at the end of Traceway.
I took this photo near the tee of one of the holes on the creek course. This view shows the rolling hills found in our area. The green grass contrasts with the surrounding trees. Carolina Trace Autumn Views along the Creek Course
Carolina Trace Autumn Views This autumn view was taken along one of the side roads in the Woodmere and Trentwood section of Carolina Trace. What a great autumn view!
This is a view of one of the holes on the Lake Course overlooking Lake Trace. Note the golf cart - I wasn’t the only one enjoying the beautiful weather and great scenery of autumn in Carolina Trace. Carolina Trace Autumn Views along the Lake Course
